Triptych Analysis
My triptych project was based upon photographing two portraits of a certain individual but also capturing their interest in another separate still image. In my case this was photographing a couple of friend of mine who are dedicated to Mountain Biking, so I created three images, two of which were portraits and one of which was an image of both of them in the zone when Mountain Biking in an urban area, in the city of Exeter. For each of my images I printed an acetate which I then developed into three darkroom printed images on matte darkroom paper, this process turned out to work very well with the images however with a two out of the three it was very tough to get the correct exposure due to the initial lighting situation at the time of the shoot.
My first image is a portrait of both the mountain bikers standing back to back, I elected the background for this image to be a graffiti wall, this was to enhance the overall contrast in the image and to make the image more lively with things going on. The graffiti on the wall also acts like thought coming from both of the models minds, creating a sense of creativity in the image, making it more compelling.
My second image is a portrait of both riders again, enjoying themselves in the moment whilst they were taking a break from riding, this image really captures the essence of enjoyment and friendship in the way that both riders are laughing at each other. This also highlights how well the relationship between the two riders is manufactured over time and how it has developed. This particular image was taken with a Nikon D750 this allowed me to be able to receive no noise until I reached a very high ISO sensitivity, due to the lighting conditions being extremely dark I was unable to capture a sharp image of laughter due to the movement and camera shake, for this reason I increase my ISO to 2500 which enabled me to gain a slightly faster shutter speed which allowed me to capture a relatively sharper image to emphasise the facial expressions in particular.
My third image was the frame that captured one of the riders on the bike, the place where he feels just as safe as on he feels on his feet. To really emphasise the factor of developing skills and dedicating yourself to becoming better, I chose to contain the frame with maximum light behind the rider, to do this we examined many locations and found one in a subway where it appeared to look like a road in the image "a road to light and to a better place" by positioning the rider to face towards the light, helped me showcase the fact they might achieve a goal on their bikes however both riders I was working with are always eager to set a new goal and strive to succeed.
