Consisting of extreme sports, lifestyle and landscapes
Chris Burkard
This particular image produced by Chris Burkard has been a big inspiration towards my main A-level project, this is due to the fact the theme for my project will be adventure. Where I will be capturing landscapes of all kinds however I will include people in my images to express a sense of scale and the human connection between them both. As seen in this image the composition emphasises the scale of the landscape by capturing the image with a wide angle lens, making the human figure seem small and immersed in the surroundings.
This image is an example of connecting landscapes with extreme sport photography. I believe this is the best way to tie humans into landscapes through still images as it can often create a large amount of juxtaposition, due to the still life of the landscape contrasting behind the action packed extreme sport athlete.
Callum Snape
Callum Snape’s workflow consists of very similar images, of people in the image looking onwards to the landscape in the background. Making the viewers feel as if they are there in that location. I think by using this technique of using a human in the image, means the landscape has more of a stronger effect, especially if I were to recreate this within my genre of extreme sport photography.
This image produced by Callum Snape is extremely effective by the way that the natural light emitted at sunset has been used to back light the subject and landscapes situated in the foreground. I would like to influence this technique of using natural light into my A-level project, and try and not use artificial light, meaning I will be challenged more to produce unique images, due to the fact I will have to be efficient on when I choose to capture images, so I can capture the most compelling light possible.
Lucas Gilman
This image produced by Gilman especially caught my attention due to the fact it matches my project ideology extremely well – Capture adventure where the human is scaled next to a large landscape. The colours dominant in this image also juxtaposes very effectively between the brown rock formation and the smooth deep blue in the sky, which were both more than probably enhanced using a polarising filter, to help enhance colours however eliminate large reflections on the snow and clouds.
White water kayaking is an extreme sport which I will be influencing into my project a lot more, alongside mountain biking which my figure project has consisted of entirely. With a few changes in equipment I will also be able to achieve angles such as this aerial image of a kayaker tackling a monstrous rapid and waterfall section. To achieve other unique angles I will also be using a waterproof housing for illusive half in half out and underwater shots and also climbing equipment which will allow me to repel myself into difficult spots, all in all, enabling me to create more unique and compelling images.
