Shoot 2: Adventure Sports
This shoot documenting adventure sports was actually accomplished over a total of 3 weekends worth of photography in Exeter as there was so much to capture, so I did end up with a lot of images however that made for better final piece's, I set myself up in different locations to enable myself to capture and produce compelling images of several different sports in a variety of landscapes and terrain.
My shoot didn't quite go to plan with the fact I wanted to capture multiple sports, as instead I ended up just documenting the sport of Mountain biking.
Equipment for this shoot was very specific and important. With me out in the field I had a Nikon D750 body, shooting at 6.5fps allowing me to capture quick movements. A 16-35mm f/4 lens for wide angle shots, with a wide f/stop to allow me to achieve a fast shutter speed in low light, and a 70-300mm VR for more detailed shots of the athletes, to exclude some of the surroundings and create a more direct main point of focus. I also used a flash set up for most of the images to allow me to capture and freeze the movement, by using high speed flash sync techniques.
The main aim for this shoot was to produce content that would express fast flowing movement, being freezed in camera by using a fast shutter speedand high speed flash sync.
When on this shoot, I developed my skills to produce better images using high speed flash sync, as it is a very hard technique to master due to the fact as a photographer you are breaking the boundaries of shutter speed being used to capture the image without letting the shutter curtains appear within the frame.
As a result the images I produced, I was reasonably happy with and even more so with the difficult technique of high speed flash sync, however it enabled me to subtly illuminate my subjects, making them stand out more from the background, and allowing me to freeze their movements extremely quickly.
