When creating this emphasised black and white waterfall landscape, I was very lucky with the weather condition, being extremely rainy and stormy. This meant I was able to produce a deep shadow contrasted landscape that appeared to be very eye catching due to the dramatics. Also due to this condition, I was able to achieve a relatively slow shutter speed to create a smooth texture on the water which would create juxtaposition against the rough rock formation.
However due to the fact the image was high contrast I had to neutralise the highlights in the sky, where there was a break in the clouds. This resulted in me using a neutral density filter to balance the exposure and save me from having to capture a bracketed exposure which is definitely very difficult to do in heavy rain, because I would have to enable mirror lock up, which would possibly not work in rainy conditions due to hailstones causing minor vibrations which would be picked up by the camera, and also evident in post production.
The main sense of pattern that I achieved and produced in the image was the patterns within the rocks, that draws the attention towards the waterfall - the main focal point within the frame. What is also interesting about this particular image, inspired by the use of patterns, is that all of the evidence of patterns consist of lines, both the line created by the flow of the waterfall and the lines that segment each and every rock slab, all work together to create a heavy pattern that creates effective deep shadows
